Cookie
A cookie is a piece of information that is passed back and forth between your web browser and the web server when you are visiting a particular web site. Despite much previous hype, cookies are not a bad thing. While some less than up-front or honest web sites may attempt to use cookies to help them try and figure out more information about you, it is very easy to defeat such tactics. If you are concerned about such sites trying to track information about you, simply disallow third-party cookies. Most modern browsers now come configured this way by default. Additionally, by periodically cleaning out your web browsers cache, you can destroy any tracking cookies that might be used by certain sites. Otherwise, cookies are used in many very useful ways. The most important is that almost any web site that requires you to login for access or to use certain features will require the use of cookies in order to maintain your login connection. Without cookies, you would not be able to login to your banking site, or your GMail or Yahoo Email accounts.
