Question I want to create a new web site of my own and am having trouble coming up with a domain name with the .com top level domain. I know there are many other top level domains I might be able to use. Where can I find a list of them?

Answer While there certainly are many different top level domains besides the ubiquitous .com top level domain, some of these may have some restrictions on whom may use them. Many are open to all, some have "suggested" restrictions on who should use them, and some have enforced restrictions on whom should use them.

For example, some top level domains like .com are open to anyone.

Some top level domains, like .org, are suggested to only be used by organizations that are not commercial in nature, such as social groups and clubs. But these are actually open to anyone to register as this is no longer actively enforced.

And then, some top level domains, like .edu, are enforced to only allow registrants to be actual types of organizations specifically allowed by this type of top level domain. In this case, the .edu domain is specifically only for educational institutions.

ICANN is the controlling body that sees to the overall managment of the internets domain name registries and a complete list is maintained by ICANN at:
