Sometimes images that have been on the site disappear. What can cause this? Could this be caused by the "Remove User Images" process?

If you use the "Add Similar Item" button and then delete the image from either the original listing or the "similar" listing, the image will be removed from the other listing as well. Other than this, there are no known issues that may cause images to disappear.
Deleting a listing does not delete the images. Images are only deleted by specifically editing an auction and removing the image, or from the xcAuction Administrator's page by running "Remove User Images" from the "Maintain" menu. Running this will not delete any images that belong to open ads, including ones listed with "Add Similar Item," and indeed does not remove any images that are older than the oldest listing in the database.
