Question I am trying to upload an image to a website, but I only see a red X in Internet Explorer, or a broken-image icon in Firefox, or the site tells me "No file was transmitted. Nothing uploaded." Viewing the actual image in Firefox gives this error:

"The image “http://yoursite.com/Image.JPG” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors."

I can open the file on my computer without any problems. What's going on?

Answer This can occur when the image is saved using the CMYK color mode that some image editors support. Many web browsers cannot display images saved in this format. In order to use these types of images, you should convert the image to RGB color mode, which can be properly displayed in most web browsers.

Some image editing programs such as those included with Microsoft Windows (Paint and Imaging) cannot read CMYK files at all. The exact method for converting the images to RGB mode will vary depending on the image editing tool you use. If you use the popular tool, Adobe Photoshop, that many web developers use, you can convert the image by by opening the image in Photoshop, selecting Mode from the Image menu, clicking on RGB Color and then re-saving the image.
