Question I have a co-located or dedicated server that my web host setup for me and now I need to login to it using Terminal Services. What is that and how do I do that?

Answer Microsoft Terminal Services (MSTS), also known as Microsoft Remote Desktop (RD), is a way for you to remotely login to the system or server using the same graphical desktop interface you would have as if you were sitting right at the machine's display and keyboard. Using MSTS, you can complete manage and do nearly anything you could as if you were sitting right at the machine. To use MSTS, you need a client application installed on your machine. The client uses the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to communicate with your server or remote machine. If your PC has Windows XP installed, it should already have the MSTS client installed. You can find it by clicking on your START menu, click on ALL PROGRAMS, then click ACCESSORIES, then click COMMUNICATIONS, then click REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION to start it.

If your PC is running a version of Windows previous to Windows XP, then you will need to download and install the MSTS client. To download a copy, go to the URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx

Once you get it installed, you can find it by clicking on your START menu, click on ALL PROGRAMS, then click ACCESSORIES, then click COMMUNICATIONS, then click REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION to start it.

When you run it, you would use the provided IP address or Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that your web host or ISP provided to you when prompted for the computer name to connect to. When you click CONNECT, you will see a window open with the Windows Server login prompt.
