Is IIS/ASP as a platform secure or stable enough for eCommerce? What other sites that I might know use it?
Without a doubt, ASP certainly is an excellent platform for web server applications and is secure for real business use. As is true with any platform, each has some special strengths and weaknesses. But most of those types of differences only matter to the actual developers writing and maintaining the code. If you are simply looking at it as an application platform, then the differences should matter even less. You could compare ASP as a web server application platform to many other platforms, such as PHP, JSP, Perl, cgi and such, and of course each will have certain Pros and Cons. There is not any one platform that is so significantly better than another as to totally be an end all and be all choice well above all others. If you want independent proof of that, simply ask 101 people who should know, and most likely you will get about 101 slightly different opinions.
System security and stability are sometimes treated as a trait or fault of a particular platform. The truth is, there is no proof that any one type of system or platform is inherently more or less secure than another. Simply researching the security alerts and warnings issued by various vendors and third-party monitoring or news sites will show that there is no platform that is uniquely immune from such issues. The only real way to keep a system stable and secure is through regular maintenance. This means keeping the system up to date with any patches or fixes released by the vendor. If you are considering running a server of your own, and do not know if you will be able to maintain it, you might want to considered using a managed server from your hosting company where they would be able to update and maintain critical systems for you.
There certainly are plenty of other sites built upon IIS and use ASP for various parts of their site. Below is a list of just a few sites with some big names that you might recognize. If you look through this list, you will see that if you choose ASP as a platform for your web server applications, you will surely be in good company.
